In the Spirit–Seeking God’s Will: Romans 8
Romans 8: In the Spirit—Seeking God’s Will
It’s been a year since I posted on this blog. The reason: I wrote a book. That is part of the news I want to share, but that isn’t the story.
Last night I was in a book club with people I love very much. They inspire me and enrich my life. After a few of their shares about the text, I mentioned how it reminded me of Romans 8. Someone in the group then said—and I’m paraphrasing because I can’t quite remember the exact wording. I was still considering what had been said—”Come on, we don’t need that stuff. We find God everywhere.”
I smirk as I write, but isn’t that just the point?
God is in these verses. God is in me, in you, in the trees, and in the air we breathe. We do not need to find God in these pages, yet we do find God there.
God is inspiration, creativity, and knowledge. Without the Spirit, we would not have language or a need for it, because it is in those words that we can connect. In the text of Romans 8, we learn what we intuitively know: That sometimes our soul must speak another language of a Higher Order because the words will not do (Romans 8:26-27 NIV):
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
I’ve been through some rough patches in life. Likely you have too. In those moments, I was unsure which way life would go. I was afraid. Hell, at times, I am still afraid. But there are three things that reinforce my faith in the future and in these principles:
- Things have worked out. In my darkest moments, I was unsure how the future would look. In the rearview mirror, those points turned out better than I might have imagined.
- Where there is a will, there is a way. As long as I keep going, and for me, leaning into faith and the voice of the Spirit, the path becomes clear.
- I don’t have to do it alone, and neither do you. At each point in the journey, God has led me to the right people at the right time.
The Flow—a term I use throughout The Morality of Money to describe the movement of the Spirit—put a story in my life, and I added it to the pages of The Morality of Money. It took me 30 years to accumulate these lessons through my career—and even more through life’s “wordless groans” in which I could not always find the words, but a God of Love knew my heart and placed in it a Guiding Light—a way to seek “the will of God.”
The Morality of Money openly reflects my Christian faith, but it was never written only for Christians. Although it recently reached Amazon’s Top 100 in Christian Values & Virtues, my hope has always been to write a book that speaks to anyone seeking greater wisdom, courage, and freedom. Throughout the book, I intentionally use GOD in all caps so readers can consider these ideas from their own perspective. My hope is simply that people discover principles that lead them toward a path of Higher Order and a life less burdened by fear.
Yes, The Morality of Money is a book about finance and money. But over the years, I’ve come to believe that money is rarely the real issue. Fear is. Pride is. Purpose is. Our relationship with money often reflects our relationship with ourselves, with others, and ultimately with GOD. True prosperity begins when we align our lives with Universal Truths.
If this reflection resonates with you, I invite you to journey with me through The Morality of Money. I hope it encourages you to face fear with courage and discover the freedom that comes from living in harmony with Universal Truths. Have you ever felt that need for a ‘Higher Order’ language during your own rough patches? I’d love to hear your thoughts below.
